Pilot Projects

There are a number of government agencies and departments that have been working with industry partners to showcase the potential of LED technology in the marketplace, including the Toronto Atmospheric Fund’s Light Savers, and the US Department of Energy GATEWAY projects. Below is a compilation of these, and other, demonstration projects.

Demonstration Assessment of LED Roadway Lighting – I-35W Bridge Minneapolis, Minnesota Bridge The I-35W Bridge features LED roadway lighting on the main span, offering DOE the opportunity to study the use of LED lighting in a highly challenging environment over the course of three years. Report
Demonstration Assessment of LED Walkway Lighting Atlantic City, New Jersey Exterior pedestrian walkway Six modular LED luminaires were installed along exterior walkways, replacing six high-pressure sodium luminaires. Project results include photometric data, projected energy savings, payback analysis, and user feedback on perceived improved visibility. Report

LED Museum Accent Lighting – Fields Museum Chicago Interior accent lighting 32 halogen track luminaires used to light an enclosed gallery exhibit were replaced with an LED system using 26 track fixtures. Report
Demonstration Assessment of LED Freezer Case Lighting – Albertsons Grocery Eugene, Oregon Interior accent lighting Upright freezer cases were retrofitted with LED striplights combined with occupancy sensors, and compared against standard fluorescent lighting on the opposite side of the aisle. Laboratory Evaluation of LED T8 Replacement Lamp Products  Seattle  Interior commercial lighting  Evaluation of three LED products designed to directly replace linear fluorescent lamps (most commonly “T8” lamps) in commercial ambient lighting. Report
 Interior LED Retrofit Lamps- InterContinental  San Francisco  Interior commercial lighting  Halogen wall-grazing luminaires, track lights, and recessed downlights in the lobby and other areas were retrofitted with 6W LED MR-16 or 11W PAR30 replacement lamps. Report
 Demonstration Assessment of LED Residential Downlights and Undercabinet Lights  Eugene, Oregon  Interior commercial lighting  LED downlights represent one of the most promising applications for SSL technology and significant energy savings. This project studied the installation of LED downlights and undercabinet lights in two “green” showcase homes in Eugene, Oregon. Report
 Demonstration Assessment of LED Area Lights for a Commercial Garage – Providence Portland Medical Center  Portland, Oregon  Parking garage PPMC replaced several high-pressure sodium fixtures in the hospital parking garage with LED luminaires, enabling a side-by-side comparison of the lighting performance, quality, energy savings, and user feedback.  University of Toronto Street Lighting  Toronto  Parking lot Replacement of 43 1080 W HPS fixtures with 291 W LED fixtures on a parking lot. Twelve 291 W LED fixtures were added to enhance security. Profile
 Application Assessment of Bi-Level LED Parking Lot Lighting – Raley’s Supermarket  West Sacramento, California  Parking lot Several metal halide (MH) luminaires were replaced with new LED luminaires incorporating bi-level operation (dim state and full state) controlled by motion detectors. Results indicated an energy savings potential approaching 70% on an annual basis, a more uniform lighting distribution, and payback periods of less than five years. Report

 Yorkdale Shopping Centre  Toronto  Parking lot Replacement of 43 1080 W HPS fixtures with 291 W LED fixtures on a parking lot. Profile
 Parking Lot Lighting – T.J. Maxx  Manchester, New Hampshire  Parking lot High-pressure sodium and metal halide luminaires were replaced with LED luminaires controlled by integral occupancy sensors that vary between “high” and “low” light output settings. Report

 Demonstration Assessment of LED Street Lighting  Oakland, California  Street The City of Oakland wanted to assess the energy, economic, and safety impacts of replacing high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights with LED luminaires. This project involved installation of 15 LED street lights – ten on the LED-only street and five on the LED/HPS street Report

 LED Street Lighting – San Francisco  City of San Francisco, California  Street In the Sunset District of San Francisco, four manufacturers’ LED street lights were installed on four public avenues to replace 100-watt nominal high-pressure sodium luminaires, independently demonstrating the performance of a number of currently available products in one specific application.  Demonstration Assessment of LED Roadway Lighting on Residential and Commercial Streets  Palo Alto, California  Street  Seven LED and three induction streetlight luminaires replaced high-pressure sodium (HPS) luminaires on two residential streets, and two LED and two induction luminaires were installed on a commercial street to test a remote streetlight monitoring system. Report Brief
 Advanced Lighting Technologies: LED Street Lighting in Rouyn-Noranda  City of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec  Street Laboratory, pilot project, and citizen survey campaigns were conducted to determine the effectiveness for LED street lighting. The study determined it is possible to reduce consumption from 130 watts (100 watt HPS lamp) to 55 watts with LED technology with diminished, yet satisfactory, luminosity levels. English Report
